THE 20 BEST TOTTENHAM PLAYERS IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE ERA
The imminent departure of Christian Eriksen in this window (should have been done last summer in my opinion) got me thinking about my list of our best players since football was invented in 1992 by Sky Sports.
I tweeted some stats from the BBC (if you keep them off politics they're not bad) the other day that said since joining Spurs Eriksen has more assists, has created more chances and scored more times from outside the penalty area than any other Premier League player. A lot of this will be lost because his form and attitude this season has been questionable at best and downright terrible at worst. This is a shame in my eyes because he should be remembered a a wonderful talent who has been a great player for us. I hope history will be kind to him and some of the vitriol directed towards him last weekend will be forgotten as time passes.
A couple of years back I listed a squad made up of what I considered to be the best players I'd seen since first going to The Lane. Obviously, quite a few of those were pre '92 and of course players have improved / worsened since then. Also, I'm not as in love with the team as I was then and am able to look with a more critical eye. Its probably a bit strong to say I'm disillusioned but I've lost faith in the Board and the players and don't have much faith in the current manager either. But you know what its like. I'll still stick by them and defend them when I have to because I just can't help myself.
Anyway, lets kick off (reverse order of course)
No 20 Aaron Lennon
No 19 Robbie Keane
No 18 Rafael van der Vaart
No 17 Hugo Lloris
No 16 Darren Anderton
No 15 David Ginola
No 14 Dele
No 13 Teddy Sheringham
No 12 Ledley King
No 11 Kyle Walker
No 10 Dimitar Berbatov
No 9 Son Heung-min
No 8 Toby Alderweireld
No 7 Jan Vertonghen
No 6 Christian Eriksen
No 5 Jurgen Klinsmann
No 4 Mousa Dembele
No 3 Gareth Bale
No 2 Harry Kane
No 1 Luka Modric
Well there it is. Of course its only my opinion and I'd guess most Spurs fans would disagree with my selections but that's football. A game of opinions. My reasons for selecting the little Croatian maestro as my numero uno? He was capable of 40 yard passes, he was always there wanting the ball, just like Ossie used to, he occasionally scored spectacular goals, he often provided the searching pass to the wing or the forward, the linebreaker before the final assist, he could beat a player with skill and no little pace, he worked hard and won the ball back many, many times. Basically a brilliant all around midfielder and second only to Hoddle as the best to wear the shirt in my time as a fan. Then of course he went to Real Madrid, has won everything there is to win including the Balon D'Or for being the best player in the world, oh and captained his little country to the World Cup Final. Not too bad for a lad that grew up in a war zone.
